Aegis Medical Innovations is a medical device development company thathas designed a micro-invasive tool (called Sierra) that can be deployed in amicro-invasive procedure.
The procedure reduces the annual 1:3 risk of a fatal stroke in patients suffering from untreated irregular heartbeat by eliminating any flow of blood between the heart and a sack attached at an opening to the left side of the heart, called left atrial appendage.
Strokes rank #5 amongst all causes of death in the United States. Each year, about 795,000 people in the USA have strokes, and of these, 137,000 result in death. Of the total number, 610,000 of these cases are first strokes, and 185,000 people that have a stroke will have another within 5 years.
The Sierra has been in development for 11+ years with over $20m USD invested. Aegis is building on its 100% successful proof of concept trial that was undertaken in Poland.
